Bahaism is described by Hippolyte Dreyfus-Barney as not a new religion, but a religion renewed. Dreyfus, who became the first French Bahá’í in 1901, dedicated his life to the study of the Bahá’í writings, translating them into French after receiving formal training in Arabic and Persian. Following his marriage to fellow Bahá’í Laura Clifford Barney in 1911, he adopted the name Dreyfus-Barney.
