In Episode 6 of The Regulated Parent Podcast, Kay Jappie sits down over coffee with Neuro-Education specialist Nicola Killops for an honest and insightful conversation about Twice-Exceptionality.

As two Twice-Exceptional mothers of Twice-Exceptional children, they bring together professional insight, lived experience and the realities of raising children with complex, uneven profiles. Kay is the mother of a nine-year-old daughter, while Nicola’s son is now a twenty-two year old young adult.

Together, they explore giftedness, Autism, ADHD, asynchronous development, emotional intensity, sensory differences and nervous-system regulation. They unpack how exceptional strengths can mask genuine support needs, while challenges may prevent a child’s abilities from being fully recognised.

This conversation invites parents, educators and professionals to move beyond behaviour, performance and one-size-fits-all expectations, to understand the child beneath the profile and see giftedness and neurodivergence as interconnected parts of the whole person. Because twice-exceptional children do not need their complexity reduced. They need to be recognised, understood and supported in ways that allow them to flourish.
