    2026/09/08

    Send us Fan Mail

•Get rich quick thinking as the common trap behind scams
•Financial literacy as action, not just information
•Why “literacy” should reduce the odds of getting scammed
•Building money decisions around purpose and a realistic lifestyle goal
•Monetization incentives that warp financial advice online
    •Tax refunds as over-withholding, not a bonus
•How big refunds trigger short-term splurges and long-term stress
•Practical ways to review withholding, credits, and retirement contributions

    • migrating for work and losing the default closeness of cousins and elders

  • Ep24 Spiritual Health: "I Tried Everything Not to Believe" — A Spiritual-But-Not-Religious Dad's Reckoning
    2026/07/21

    Send us Fan Mail

Unc Talk Podcast closes out the men's-health series on its third and hardest pillar — the soul. Still in Austin, host J Staff sits with Joe From Work and He's Jared to round out the spiritual arc that ran through Episodes 22 and 23. The thesis lands early on, and it's a father's question, not a theologian's: Joe is spiritual but not religious — he found something real outside the building — and now he wants to know how to give a 13-year-old "a scaffolding for his soul" without forcing a religion he himself walked away from.

The honest mirror is the danger of having nothing to hand down. The table names it plainly: a man who refuses to wrestle with the big questions doesn't escape them — "if you don't look at the existential, the existential will find you," as loneliness, depression, and a quiet nihilism. Chase pleasure instead and you only dig deeper: "it's a void filled with another void." Joe owns that denying that part of his life for years stunted him, and that intellect alone couldn't get him there — "we're ill-equipped; I can't teach an ant calculus."

The turn is Joe's reluctant testimony. He wasn't looking — he was actively trying not to believe — and kept hitting the same answer: "I tried everything to not have this be the answer." The hardest part wasn't finding it; it was surrendering the control he never really had. Jared offers the reframe through an unlikely saint: Sam Walton, who wasn't religious but always took his family to church because he saw the value of the institution as scaffolding — love, giving, "not killing, not stealing." You don't have to believe every word to let your kid stand inside something bigger than himself.

So the move is practical and humble: find a good church, take the kids casually, and read the Bible "by your vibe" — like inherited DNA that protected the ancestors even where it's flawed. But read it before you reject it — "know what you're burning" — and approach it without the hubris of thinking you're the one who finally cracked it. This one's for any Black man, father, or uncle who believes but can't sit in a pew — and still wants to hand the next generation a soul.
