In this message from our Un$trapped series, Less Owed, More Free, we look at how financial freedom can create greater freedom to live generously for the Kingdom of God.
Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” When debt and financial pressure control our decisions, they can also compete for our hearts. Proverbs 22:7 warns that “the borrower is the slave of the lender.”
Through three spiritual disciplines—self-control, sacrifice, and seeing ahead—we discover practical, biblical principles for owing less and living with greater freedom. Self-control teaches us to say no now so we can say yes later. Sacrifice calls us to give up something we love for something we love even more. And seeing ahead challenges us to plan today for the freedom we want tomorrow.
The goal isn’t simply to have less debt—it’s to become less strapped by financial pressure so we are freer to follow Christ, live generously, and invest in what matters for eternity.
