The U.S. women’s basketball team just smashed France 97-79 to claim their fifth straight FIBA World Cup title — and their 36th consecutive win in the tournament. Captain Breanna Stewart led the charge with 22 points and her second MVP award, stepping up when it mattered most. Down by as much as 14 early on, they clawed back to trail by just two at halftime before pulling away in the third quarter. Despite being one of the youngest squads ever sent to the World Cup — featuring debuts from stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese — it was the veteran leadership that carried them to gold. France, playing their best-ever tournament, fought hard but couldn’t close the gap after a pivotal American run. This victory cements the U.S. as the undisputed global standard in women’s basketball — and their dominance? Still going strong.
