Three of the eleven are about the kitchen. The other eight are about him. Eleven things on a note on his phone, three of them about the kitchen and eight about the builder who has been fitting it, to be read out to him on Friday morning when they walk round with the list and the last payment falls due. In five weeks, as he tells it, nothing has been said: tea at eleven, paid on the day, not a cross word, and the note filling up behind it. The companion brings Iris Murdoch’s essay ‘The Idea of Perfection’, where a mother who feels hostility to her daughter-in-law behaves beautifully to her throughout, and then, with the girl put beyond reach and nothing new to go on, finds her refreshingly simple where she had found her vulgar, and delightfully youthful where she had found her tiresomely juvenile. It scores twice on the note: five weeks of good behaviour, on his own account, settle nothing about the looking, and one line turns a start time missed by ten minutes into a word for the man. Then, asked to do to the eight what the mother did to the girl, it writes the second list out and hands it over for Friday, with a line in it about a cupboard door it has never seen.
