The Beatles released their final single, “The Long and Winding Road,” from the album Let It Be on May 11, 1970, in the United States. The album itself had appeared just three days earlier, on May 8. This came roughly a month after Paul McCartney publicly announced he was leaving the band on April 10, 1970, leaving many fans shocked and saddened.

The song’s reflective lyrics and sweeping orchestral arrangement capture a sense of sorrow and farewell that mirrored the emotional weight of the group’s end. For many listeners, it felt like a bittersweet goodbye from a band that had transformed popular music.

Far from struggling, the single was an immediate commercial success. It sold about 1.2 million copies in its first two days, entered the Billboard Hot 100 on May 23, and climbed to number one on June 13, 1970, where it stayed for two weeks. It became the Beatles’ 20th and final U.S. number-one hit. Although its contemporary sales did not earn it a gold certification at the time, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it platinum status in February 1999 for sales exceeding one million copies.

As fans said goodbye to The Beatles, “The Long and Winding Road” stood as a powerful reminder of the band’s extraordinary legacy. The song continues to reach and connect with listeners navigating their own life changes, evoking both the joy and the lasting memories of a transformative era in music.
