What should we do when we pray and don't hear an answer from God?

What should we do when we DO hear from God but the results don't seem to match the instructions we hear?

What happens when we get distracted by the signs for the exit and end up missing the exit itself? Or we get so wrapped up in talking about the trip that we miss the point of the trip? Or we are enjoying the journey so much that we forget that it is not the final destination, which will be so much better?
