In December 1900, three lighthouse keepers vanished from the remote Flannan Isles, about twenty miles west of the Isle of Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. James Ducat, Thomas Marshall, and Donald McArthur simply disappeared from their post on Eilean Mòr. No bodies were ever recovered. More than a century later, this unsolved disappearance remains one of Scotland's most famous historical mysteries.
This episode walks through the historical record: the newly built Flannan Isles Lighthouse, the quiet routines of a rock station, the last ordinary entries on the station slate, the storm damage found on the west landing, and Superintendent Robert Muirhead's careful inquiry. It also separates the facts from the later legends that have gathered around the empty tower, like an untouched meal, an overturned chair, and a logbook filled with terror and prayer. Along the way we look at the theories, from a rogue wave to sea serpents and the Phantom of the Seven Hunters.
What remains, when the inventions are set aside, is a very human winter and three experienced men who set out to keep a light burning for ships they would never meet.

Barrister Charles Bravo, 31 years old and just 4 months into a marriage with wealthy widow Florence Bravo, sat down with Florence and her companion, Mrs. Jane Cox. He drank Burgundy. They did not. A little after nine he went upstairs and fell violently ill. Doctors came through the night, including Sir William Gull. On the morning of April 21, 1876, Charles died. Chemists found a massive dose of antimony... tartar emetic... in his body.

Three purchases of arsenic appear in the chemists’ registers on Sauchiehall Street, in her name. On the March 23, 1857, Pierre Emile L’Angelier dies of arsenic poisoning at home. A jury in Edinburgh returns a mixture of "not guilty" and "not proven". This episode walks through what the record actually shows... the letters, the poisons, the trial, the later years under other names... and where the disputed stories begin.

Welcome back to 31 Nights of Frights on True Crime Sleep Stories... You’ve heard the urban legend. Someone’s driving past the pumpkins and fog machines in late October when one house seems to have gone too far. There’s a body hanging from a tree, or slumped on a porch, so realistic that people slow down. Kids point. Days go by. Then someone finally walks close enough to realize it was never a decoration.

In October 2015, in Chillicothe, Ohio, a version of that story actually happened. A young mother was found hanging from a fence on a quiet dead-end street. Neighbors had walked right past her that morning. The case that followed included an arrest, DNA evidence, a trial, and a not-guilty verdict. The full story of what happened to Rebecca Cade, and the two other times this same legend has come true, is in tonight’s episode.

Welcome to another night of 31 Nights of Frights on True Crime Sleep Stories.

On the night of February 8, 1855, snow fell over the villages along the River Exe in South Devon, England. The next morning, people in Topsham, Lympstone, Exmouth, Woodbury, Starcross, Dawlish, and Teignmouth found a line of small hoof-shaped prints in the snow. They came in a single file, about eight and a half inches apart. They went up to doors, over tall walls, across rooftops, over haystacks, and through a drainpipe. They showed up on both sides of a two-mile-wide estuary.

Tonight we follow those tracks through the frightened villages, into the pages of The Times and the Illustrated London News, and into the sermons and notes of two local vicars, the Reverend G. M. Musgrave and the Reverend Henry Thomas Ellacombe. Then we look at the explanations people have offered ever since, from badgers and wood mice to a runaway balloon from the Devonport dockyard. Was it the Devil? Or something more benign?
