Iron Mike:" Mike Ditka, the legendary former Chicago Bears HC and first TE ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, has died at the age of 86, his family announced last Friday, but no cause of death was announced: Ditka rose to national prominence leading the 1986 Bears, a team that boasted arguably the greatest defense in NFL history, to the franchise's only Super Bowl title - - Known for his fiery temper, Ditka often clashed with members of the 1985 team - commonly referred to as "Da' Bears" - including QB Jim McMahon and DC Buddy Ryan, but Chicago cruised to a 15-1 regular-season record and easily defeated the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX - - Hired by his former coach and Bears founder George Halas in 1982, Ditka led the Bears to the playoffs seven (7) times in his 11 seasons and reached the NFC Championship Game on three (3) occasions - - The former No.5 overall pick of the 1961 NFL Draft by the Bears, Ditka won Rookie of the Year (ROTY) after becoming the first TE to surpass 1,000 receiving yards - remaining the only Chicago TE ever to do so: He played six (6) years for the Bears, two for the Philadelphia Eagles and four (4) for the Dallas Cowboys — Ditka was a member of the Bears' 1963 NFL championship team and the Cowboys' squad that won Super Bowl VI - - **NOTE: Ditka was the first TE to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, being inducted in 1988 - - The Bears retired his jersey number, No.89, in 2013, saying it would be the last number retired by the NFL franchise - - The Bears eventually fired Ditka following the 1992 season, but he resurfaced with the Saints in 1997, but he was unable to replicate the success he had in Chicago, however, going 15-33 in his three (3) seasons in New Orleans: Ditka's run in New Orleans is best remembered for the trade that brought RB Ricky Williams to the Saints - as New Orleans traded eight (8) draft picks, including two first-round selections, to Washington for the right to move up and draft Williams No.5 overall in 1999 — Regardless, Ditka's short stint in New Orleans had no negative impact on his marketability: He became an icon in Chicago, opening several restaurants and endorsing a long list of products, including wine, cigars and sausages - and he also starred in television commercials & appeared as himself, in several television shows and in Will Ferrell's 2005 comedy "Kicking and Screaming." - - After his coaching career, Ditka worked as an analyst, first at NBC and then for ESPN, including as a member of the "Sunday NFL Countdown" crew alongside Chris Berman - - A native of Aliquippa, PA, Ditka was a three-sport-athlete (football, basketball & baseball) at Pitt University, who pursued a career in professional football after college: As a TE for the Panthers, he led Pitt in receiving in each of his three (3) seasons on varsity (1958-60) and was a unanimous All-America selection in 1960 - and he was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986 — Ditka and Baltimore's John Mackey - for which the college football award presented to the best overall TE is aptly named - changed the TE position ...
