Before there was a cartel, there was a teenager in Medellín with nothing but ambition and a talent for moving things that weren't supposed to move. This episode charts the complete rise and fall of Pablo Escobar — from grave-robbing and contraband electronics to commanding a cocaine empire that shipped seventy to eighty tonnes of product into the United States every single month.

Escobar didn't invent cocaine. He industrialised it. By the mid-1970s he had looked at a fragmented, loosely organised drug trade and seen something no one else had: a logistics problem waiting for a ruthless solution. He built the pipeline from the Andean coca fields through jungle processing labs to the streets of Miami and Los Angeles, and he enforced it with two tools — plata o plomo, silver or lead, and an army of teenage sicarios who turned Medellín into one of the most violent cities on earth.

But the story is never that simple. Escobar also built housing, funded football pitches, and won a seat in the Colombian Congress. The Robin Hood myth was engineered, yet it was believed — and that belief kept him protected for years.

This episode also covers the assassination of Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, Escobar's pathological terror of US extradition, the Palace of Justice siege, the bombing of Avianca Flight 203, the war against the Cali Cartel, the murder of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galán, La Catedral prison, the Search Bloc, Los Pepes — and the rooftop in Medellín where it all ended on 2 December 1993.

Colombia has never been the same. Neither has the global drug trade.
