Today in Marine Corps History, we look back at July 17th—a date marked by aviation breakthroughs and historic leadership.
First, we go back to 1927 in Ocotal, Nicaragua. A garrison of U.S. Marines is besieged by insurgent forces. Suddenly, Marine pilots dive from the sky. This mission marks the very first organized tactical dive-bombing attack in military history, successfully dispersing the enemy forces.
Fast forward to World War Two, 1943. Skies over Bougainville in the Solomon Islands explode into a massive dogfight. Marine pilots join an Allied strike force of nearly two hundred planes. Together, they take down forty-four Japanese aircraft in a decisive aerial victory.
And finally, in 2004, the Corps makes history on the home front. First Lieutenant Michelle A. Rakers is appointed the first female Assistant Director of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, breaking barriers in a musical tradition dating back to 1798.
From pioneering the skies to leading historic institutions, July 17th highlights the enduring legacy of the United States Marine Corps.
