Timur, the Central Asian conqueror who ruled as amir rather than khan, spent 1402 to 1404 doing two things that seem to contradict each other and turn out to be the same story. At Ankara, his army broke the strongest military power in Anatolia and captured the Ottoman sultan Bayezid, known as the Thunderbolt, the only Ottoman sultan taken alive in battle across six hundred years of that empire's history. Then, rather than holding the territory he had just won, Timur restored several of Anatolia's local rulers to their own lands and turned east, back toward Samarkand.

This episode follows the battle itself, including the mid-fight defection that decided it, the sack of Smyrna that the popular story usually skips past, and the two competing accounts of what happened to Bayezid afterward: the fetters described by the captive chronicler Ibn Arabshah, and the iron cage that only enters the record a century later, in the Ottoman historian Mehmed Neshri. It then follows the same conqueror two years east, to Samarkand in 1404, where craftsmen deported from Delhi and Damascus were raising the Bibi Khanum mosque, and where the Castilian ambassador Ruy Gonzalez de Clavijo watched Timur tear down finished sections of it and order them rebuilt.

The two halves of the story sit closer together than they first appear. The same restless energy that broke an army at Ankara and then walked away from the spoils drove a mosque under construction to be pulled apart and redone, again and again, in the very years Clavijo was standing there watching it rise. Sources for this episode include Ibn Arabshah's contemporary biography, Sharaf al-Din Ali Yazdi's Zafarnama, Ibn Khaldun's own account of meeting Timur outside Damascus, Clavijo's embassy narrative, and Mehmed Neshri's later Ottoman chronicle.

This episode discusses wartime killing, enslavement, and the deportation of civilian populations. Content Warning: listener discretion advised.
