Parshat Devarim opens the last 36 days of Moses's life. Rashi records the numbers of the journey from Sinai to the border of the Land. The ordinary route was 11 days. The expedited route God prepared was 3 days. The actual route was 40 years.
Every ascent of consequence meets a prosecution. Before Sinai, before entry to the Land, before the reign of Hezekiah that was to be the reign of Messiah, before the rescue of the Mir yeshiva students who reached Kobe during the Second World War. Nothing about spiritual transformation is uncontested.
