What if therapy isn’t a quick fix, but the hardest work you ever choose to keep doing?
Paula thought therapy would be simple: figure out what was wrong, learn how to fix it, and move on. Instead, it became a years-long journey of trust, vulnerability, skill-building, trauma work, setbacks, growth, and persistence. In this first episode of Therapy Unraveled, Paula and Lillian look back at what therapy actually felt like from both sides of the couch, why the work was so hard, and why Paula still says it was worth it.
Therapy is supposed to help. Nobody really tells you how hard it can be.
In the first episode of Therapy Unraveled, Paula and Lillian unpack the gap between what Paula expected therapy to be and what it actually became.
Paula talks about the stigma she felt walking into therapy more than 20 years ago, expecting a quick answer to what was “wrong” with her, and discovering instead that meaningful change took time, trust, vulnerability, persistence, and a lot of hard work.
Together, they look back at their long therapeutic relationship, including skill-building, DBT, CBT, trauma work, EMDR, difficult sessions, rocky moments, and the gradual shift from simply surviving to understanding herself and eventually using what she learned to help others.
They also talk candidly about why therapists can’t do the work for clients, why fit matters, why it’s okay to find a different therapist, and why the therapeutic relationship itself can become such an important part of change.
In this episode:
- What Paula thought therapy would be before she started
- Why therapy was anything but a quick fix
- The role of trust and vulnerability
- Why some people need short-term therapy and others need longer-term work
- How therapy changed over time
- DBT, CBT, EMDR, and trauma work
- Why Paula stayed when things got hard
- Why Lillian stayed too
- How coping skills eventually became part of Paula’s everyday life
- Why Paula would still walk through the therapy door all over again
It was fucking hard. And it was worth it.
We'd love to hear from you!
