What is the widow's penalty? After one spouse dies, the survivor usually files taxes as a single person, with a standard deduction about half as large and brackets about half as wide, so a similar income is taxed more heavily. One Social Security check also stops, and Medicare can charge more. The penalty cannot be erased, but most of what softens it has to be done while both spouses are alive.
