Status: Document surviving with two signatures but no regnal number for the son
- Born heir at Versailles in 1775, raised amid court ceremony until the Bastille in 1789 forced his family into exile.
- Spent twenty-five years as an émigré: served with the Prince of Condé, led a failed Vendée uprising in 1795, and fought at Hohenlinden in 1800 with modest praise.
- Married Marie Thérèse, Louis XVI’s surviving daughter, in 1799 at Mittau; the marriage was unconsummated for over thirteen years, with a documented pregnancy in 1813 that ended in stillbirth.
- Lived from 1807-1814 at Hartwell House on a £300 monthly allowance, twice denied by the Tsar permission to join Russian forces against Napoleon.
- On March 12, 1814, arrived in Bordeaux and signed an archival forty-six-word document bearing both his and his father's signatures - the son identified only as "Louis Antoine," with no crown or regnal number.
