The three hundred koku grant that made her available and cost her the throne
In this episode we follow Princess Toshiko from her birth into an absolute yet hollow imperial household to her entronization as Emperor Go-Sakuramachi and the constraints that shaped her life. We trace the decisions, rituals, and political calculations that put her on the throne and then kept her there only in form - what did the three hundred koku buy, and at what price?
Person: Princess Toshiko (Emperor Go-Sakuramachi)
Date: Born 23 September 1740; entronized 1762; reigned nine years
Event: Three hundred koku grant by the Tokugawa shogunate to keep her from entering a convent
Source: Seishi Gusho court chronicle
Opposition: Formal written objection by court commander Nomiya Sadaharu
- The original imperial crown was lost; craftsmen reconstructed the crown from a statue, not a living ceremonial tradition.
- Toshiko was the middle daughter of Emperor Sakuramachi, became heir after her frail brother Emperor Momozono named her, a transfer recorded in the Seishi Gusho.
- The Tokugawa shogunate assigned her three hundred koku to ensure she remained eligible for succession rather than entering religious life.
- Court officials concealed Momozono’s death for a day and moved quickly to install Toshiko, revealing the fragility and urgency of the succession.
- Though enthroned with dragon-decorated robes and Daijōsai rites, she rarely attended rituals beyond New Year and spent forty-two years managing the throne from a room with no title on the door.
