概要
The raven banner he carried cost him his name and a place in the chronicle
In this episode, we follow the winter crossing and the Devon hill fight that left 840 men dead and a raven banner captured, tracing how a blank in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle became a name centuries later. What does that absence tell us about identity, memory, and the making of a legend?
Person: Odda of Devon
Event: Winter crossing and battle in Devon, 877-878
Ships: 23
Dead: 840
Source: Anglo-Saxon Chronicle; Estoire des Engleis; Passio sancti Eadmundi
- A fleet of 23 ships crossed from Dyfed into Devon in the winter of 877-878 carrying roughly 840 men.
- The force carried the raven banner Hræfn, a sacred standard linked to Odin and a claim to fate held by a commander.
- The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle records the capture of the raven banner by Ealdorman Odda of Devon but names no enemy leader.
- Three centuries later the Estoire des Engleis assigns the missing commander the name Ubba and links him to a Devon mound called Ubbelawe.
- Contemporary sources name leaders of the Great Heathen Army (Ivar, Halfdan, Bagsecg) while one brother of Ivar and Halfdan is mentioned elsewhere without a name.
