- Cockpit smoke began from an explosion while Jones was running a search pattern over karst towers riddled with gun positions.
- Jones located the downed pilot near a limestone tower with a multiple-barrel gun and made repeated low, direct attack passes with cannon and rockets.
- As he pressed attacks, Jones continuously transmitted the survivor’s location to the rescue aircraft despite his radio and cockpit being compromised.
