The prison camp that built the world's fastest planes for its captors
This episode delves into the extraordinary life of Robert Bartini, an aerospace engineer whose identity and allegiances were constantly in flux. It explores the profound question of what one does when their life's purpose is co-opted by those who seek their destruction.
Person: Robert Bartini
Date of Birth: May 14, 1897
Location of Birth: Fiume, Austria-Hungary (now Rijeka, Croatia)
Imprisonment: TsKB-29 (sharashka)

- Robert Bartini was born in Fiume, a contested city, to an unmarried noblewoman who reportedly drowned herself shortly after his birth.

- After his release in 1920, he moved to Italy, gained Italian citizenship, and joined the Italian Communist Party before moving to the Soviet Union.
- By 1936, his Stal-seven aircraft broke an international speed record at the International Exhibition in Paris, making it the fastest plane of its kind.
