The oil that burned your feet, and the empire that died with you
This episode explores the story of Cuauhtémoc, the last tlatoani of Tenochtitlan, and the choices he faced as his world crumbled around him. It delves into the historical accounts of his capture and the events leading to his execution, leaving listeners to ponder the true nature of power and resistance.
Person: Cuauhtémoc
Date: February 27, 1525
Location: Jungle clearing
Event: Execution of Cuauhtémoc
Period: Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire
- Cuauhtémoc, born to lead Tenochtitlan, was trained from childhood in the elite Mexica school, the calmecac, learning astronomy, rhetoric, warfare, and the sacred calendar.
- He earned his rank through warfare and was appointed cuauhtlatoani of Tlatelolco by 1515, a title that carried his name, "eagle."
- In 1520, he accepted the title of supreme tlatoani when Tenochtitlan was ravaged by smallpox and under siege, after the deaths of Moctezuma II and Cuitláhuac.
- His first act as tlatoani was to organize Moctezuma's funeral without imperial honors, signaling a rejection of negotiation and a commitment to resistance.
- During his captivity, Cuauhtémoc's feet were tortured with oil over burning coals to reveal the location of the hidden Aztec treasury, a demand he refused to meet.
