The municipal calendar entry that made a festival fall into history
In this episode, we follow the origin story of a festival born at a royal wedding and the municipal decision that made it annual. We trace the contested moment on 12 October 1810, the additions that turned spectacle into institution, and the question that keeps historians arguing: who really started it?
Person: Franz Baumgartner
Date: 12 October 1810
Location: Theresienwiese, Munich
Event: Horse race at Prince Ludwig’s wedding leading to annual festival
Status: Municipal calendar entry made annual in 1819
- A horse race of thirty horses across 3,400 metres drew roughly forty thousand spectators to Sendlinger Hill on 12 October 1810.
- Franz Baumgartner, a coachman, crossed the finish line first and later claimed he originated the festival idea.
- Major Andreas Michael Dall'Armi appears in the official record as the proposer of the race, creating a lasting dispute over the origin.
- In 1811 the race returned with an agricultural fair added; by 1814 swings, bowling alleys and prizes appeared as the event broadened.
- In 1819 Munich’s city government formally made the event annual by signing a municipal calendar entry that institutionalized the festival.
