The loyal servant's letter lured the king into the barn

On the morning of November 23rd, 1286, villagers found a body on the floor of a church barn in Finderup, stabbed fifty-six times. The body belonged to the King of Denmark, dressed as a hunter, guarded by no castle walls and only a handful of attendants. Someone inside his own household had been feeding his location to his enemies for months — but who gave the final order, and whether the men punished for it ever raised a weapon at all, is a question the historical record has never fully closed.

In this episode, we trace Eric the Fifth of Denmark from his captive childhood through his forced signing of Denmark's first constitution to the night at Finderup, asking whether a king's murder can ever be untangled from the political charter that died alongside him.

Person: Eric the Fifth of Denmark, called Klipping
Location: Finderup, central Jutland, Denmark
Date: November 22-23, 1286
Case: the assassination of a king in a borrowed church barn
Status: nine men outlawed by the Danish court, none ever tried

- Eric the Fifth was stabbed fifty-six times in the barn at Finderup, known as Finderup Lade
- He was born in 1249, became king at age ten after his father Christopher the First died in 1259
- His mother, Queen Margaret Sambiria, ruled as regent and was defeated and captured with her son at the Battle of Lohede in 1261
- Eric signed the Nyborg charter (håndfæstning) in 1282, recognized today as Denmark's first constitution
- Rane Jonsen, the household spy who guided the king to the barn, was the only one of nine outlawed men charged directly with the killing
- Marshal Stig Andersen Hvide and Jacob Nielsen, Count of Halland, fled to Norway and were never tried; Stig reportedly raided the Danish coast for nearly twenty years under the protection of King Haakon the Fifth of Norway
