The laminated affidavit that survived the scrubland exposed her killer

In this episode, we follow how one sealed, undamaged document found on a desert boulder became the thread that tied together multiple disappearances across a rural corridor. We trace the steps, records, and decisions that left cases archived and ask how that affidavit was placed where it was and why it mattered.

Person: Darlene Rogers
Date: September 4, 2011
Location: Cañada Flats, Seco County, southern New Mexico
Case: Missing persons linked to Weaver Document Services
Finder: Grant Becker, utility technician

- Grant Becker, a line technician, discovered skeletal remains and a sealed laminated document beside a flat rock at 7:14 a.m, on September 19, 2011.
- The laminated paper was an immigration-affidavit format, notarized with a Deming-registered notary’s seal dated September 4, 2011 - the day Darlene was last seen.
- Darlene Rogers, a 31-year-old Guatemalan housekeeper in Deming, missed work on September 5 and was reported missing on September 7 by employer Sandra Vela.
- Detective Megan Roberts compared archived files and found three women - Leona Ibarra, Maria Castillo, and Darlene Rogers - all had last contacts with Weaver Document Services before vanishing.
- Sheriff Phil Mora reviewed Roberts’s memo and ordered the files archived as probable migrant transit deaths before Darlene’s remains and the laminated affidavit were found.
