The interpreter mistranslated Lun Fong's jar - and she died

In this episode, we follow the discovery of Marilyn Patterson’s body and the early investigation into the jar of dried herbs found on her windowsill. The episode traces the people, the ledger, the interpreter’s error, and the unanswered questions that kept the case open: how did the foxglove leave a locked display and end up in her room?

Person: Marilyn Patterson
Date: December 6, 1923
Location: 14 Garnet Alley, above Lun Fong’s herb shop
Person: Lun Fong
Person: Wade Wells

- A freight clerk, Steven Bishop, discovered Marilyn’s body in the drainage channel at 6:14 AM on December 6, 1923.
- The jar on her windowsill was open and contained dried chrysanthemum and dried foxglove with a Chinese brushwork label.
- Lun Fong’s inventory log showed a foxglove jar present in general stock but absent from the locked display cases with no sale or transfer recorded.
- The Toishanese shopkeeper spoke a dialect the inquest’s Cantonese-speaking student interpreter struggled with and later admitted to “approximating” phrases.
- Coroner Emmett Voss listed the cause as a cardiac episode secondary to an unknown botanical compound, while his margin note queried “foxglove?” before being crossed out.
