The folded shirt that stayed warm betrayed how Carl died
In this episode, we follow the disappearance of Carl Bailey and the odd clues that mounted around a sealed vault beneath nine Shuttle Alley. What did a warm, folded dress shirt and a single wrong line in a fire marshal’s ledger reveal about the weeks before Carl vanished?
Person: Carl Bailey
Date: April-May 1926
Location: Harwick Laundry District, nine Shuttle Alley
Witness: Marta Hollis
Official: Deputy Coroner Frank Edds
- Carl Bailey, age thirty-two, worked as a presser at Harwick Laundry & Linen and kept strict daily routines.
- A fire marshal’s ledger entry from March 1925 collapsed seven and nine Shuttle Alley into one line, erasing nine Shuttle Alley from records.
- Neighbors saw Carl leave his shift on April 28; his absence was reported by landlady Marta Hollis after missed rent and routines.
- On May 9 a septic contractor, Kenneth Bowers, opened a sealed cistern vault beneath nine Shuttle Alley and found a body and a folded shirt.
- The folded dress shirt was still warm; an adjacent active boiler feed-line suggested structural heat kept the shirt warm for eleven days.
