The consent forms that never told parents what children would see
In this episode, we follow the setup and procedures behind the classic Stanford Bobo Doll Studies and the choices researchers made in designing the sessions. What did the experiment’s staged playrooms, scripted adults, and consent forms leave in the children’s minds?
Person: Albert Bandura
Date: 1961-1965
Location: Stanford University nursery school
Participants: 234 children ages 3-6
Topic: Bobo Doll Studies experimental procedure
- Researchers scripted adult models to act aggressively toward a five-foot weighted Bobo doll while filmed through a one-way mirror.
- Parents signed permission forms that did not describe what their children would witness or do during the studies.
- Each child was first led into a room with attractive toys, then deliberately frustrated by being told the toys were reserved for others.
- After induced frustration, the child was placed alone with the Bobo doll for 20 minutes while observers recorded predefined aggressive behaviors.
- Results were recorded, categorized, and compared across groups who saw aggressive models, passive models, or no model, with stronger imitation of same-sex models.
