The brass auction ticket pinned the shawl that named his crime
In this episode, we follow the discovery that set off an investigation in Harlan Flats: a shawl nailed to a pole, a missing rancher, and a ledger entry that didn’t add up. What did the brass auction ticket and a county brand register reveal about the night Megan Walsh disappeared?
Person: Megan Walsh
Date: January 4-9, 1883
Location: Harlan Flats, Texas
Person: Sarah White
Person: Charles Vickers
- Kenneth Long found a wool shawl pinned to a telegraph pole seven miles from where Megan Walsh was last seen, with a brass auction ticket still attached.
- Megan Walsh ran the 2,200-acre Double-W Ranch, attended every Thursday auction, and kept a green leather ledger tracking transactions.
- On January 4, seventeen head listed under Double-W appeared in the county register as Crescent-V, a brand filed to a vacant lot two weeks earlier.
- The registrar’s initials, Charles Vickers, appear on the Crescent-V entry at 6:48 p.m., twelve minutes after witnesses saw Megan leave the auction barn.
- Marshal Sarah White pulled the registers and sales receipts on January 17 and found the timing and re-entry of the cattle transfers aligned too neatly to be coincidence.
