The borrowed surname that pushed a naval hero into politics
In this episode, we follow Paul Chack from his arrival at the École Navale as a young man carrying his mother's name through a decorated naval career and a bestselling life as a maritime historian, then into political clubs in the 1930s. What choices and ambitions pushed a celebrated officer toward the extreme-right networks of interwar France?
Person: Paul Chack
Date: Born 1876; executed 9 January 1945; court decision 18 December 1944
Location: France (École Navale, naval service, Paris - Fort de Montrouge)
Topic: Naval career, historical writing, political affiliations in 1930s France
Awards: Légion d'Honneur (Knight 1909; Officer 1921; Commandeur 21 November 1934), Croix de guerre
- Entered École Navale at 17 in October 1893 carrying his mother's surname rather than his father's.
- Built a steady naval career: service on Hoche, Masséna, Mouette, command of submarine Grondin and destroyer Massue, and roles at Indochina and artillery aboard Jauréguiberry.
- Earned combat recognition in WWI (attack on a German submarine 27 November 1916; promotions to lieutenant commander 1917 and commander 1920).
- After transfer to the Service historique de la marine, wrote the bestselling Marins à la bataille series, drafted his own hand-drawn maps, and won literary prizes and academy membership in the 1920s.
- In the 1930s took leadership roles in veterans' and reservist organizations (Association nationale des officiers combattants; Club de l'Effort) that connected him to authoritarian and extreme-right leagues.
