A crying baby in a bush leads soldiers to a twenty-two-year-old visionary in a ruined capital, and her Kongo theology now risks everything.

The baby's cry that toppled Dona Beatriz from her pulpit

In this episode, we trace how Beatriz Kimpa Vita rose from noble training and nganda marinda practice to claim a direct call from God, and how that claim collided with fractured Kongo politics and Portuguese-aligned missionaries. What did she try to rebuild, and why did it threaten two kingdoms?

Person: Beatriz Kimpa Vita
Date: July 2, 1706
Location: Evululu; São Salvador (ruined capital)
Event: Capture and burning at stake (she was twenty-two when they lit the fire)
Period: Early 1700s, after the Battle of Mbwila (1665)

- She was born around 1684 near Mount Kibangu into the Mwana Kongo noble class and baptized Dona Beatriz.
- The Kingdom of Kongo had fractured after King António I died at Mbwila, leaving São Salvador abandoned and rival courts claiming kingship.
- Beatriz trained as a nganda marinda in traditional spiritual arts while also practicing a localized Catholicism that blended saints with Kongo beliefs.
- In 1704 she fell gravely ill and later reported a direct divine call in Kikongo, bypassing Portuguese friars and their theology.
- Over three years she repopulated São Salvador with thousands of followers and converted high-ranking figures, provoking calls from two kingdoms to silence her.
