Before the MCU, before the modern era of interconnected superhero universes, there was X-Men. Released in 2000 and followed by X2: X-Men United in 2003 and X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, the original X-Men trilogy helped establish superhero movies as a major force in Hollywood and laid the groundwork for the comic book movie boom that followed. But how well does the trilogy actually hold up? In this video, I take a deep retrospective look at the original X-Men trilogy and revisit all three movies: X-Men, X2: X-Men United, and X-Men: The Last Stand. We'll start with the production of each movie, exploring how these films were developed, the challenges behind bringing the X-Men to the big screen, the filmmakers and actors involved, and how the production of each sequel changed as the franchise grew. We'll look at what X-Men does exceptionally well, why X2 is often considered one of the greatest superhero sequels ever made, and why X-Men: The Last Stand became such a controversial conclusion to the original trilogy. From Hugh Jackman's Wolverine and Patrick Stewart's Professor X to Ian McKellen's Magneto, Halle Berry's Storm, Famke Janssen's Jean Grey, James Marsden's Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn's Mystique, and the rest of the X-Men, we'll explore the characters that defined this era of superhero cinema. Finally, we'll look at the reception and legacy of the trilogy. We'll examine how audiences and critics responded to the movies, how the original X-Men films influenced the superhero genre, and how the franchise ultimately helped pave the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the modern superhero movie era. Twenty years later, the original X-Men trilogy is a fascinating time capsule of superhero filmmaking. Some elements have aged incredibly well, while others show just how much the genre has changed since 2000. The original X-Men trilogy may not be perfect, but its influence on modern cinema is impossible to ignore. Before the MCU, these movies helped prove that superhero stories could become major Hollywood blockbusters—and their success changed the industry forever. So, 20 years later, how good is the original X-Men trilogy? Let's revisit X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand and find out. If you enjoy X-Men, Marvel, superhero movies, comic book movies, movie retrospectives, film analysis, production deep dives, movie reviews, and long-form video essays, this is the ultimate retrospective on the original X-Men trilogy.
