概要
A single size nine white sneaker, laces tied and sitting upright between concrete blocks, became the only link between a dockside find and a crew stranded forty-one nautical miles offshore - and no rescuer knew about it for thirty-four crucial minutes. How did a correctly functioning emergency system, proper training, and one outdated registration combine to point rescuers the wrong way?
In this episode, we follow the timeline from a race start at Winslow Harbor through a sudden storm and a crippled sailboat to the signal that should have saved three lives, asking how an administrative detail altered every response. What exactly caused the delay that almost cost the crew their lives?
Date: July 6
Person: Ted Corwin
Person: Dean Donnelly
Person: Bev Stanton
Person: Phil Acker
- The Avery Cross (registration NC-7741) departed Winslow Harbor at 07:30 on July 6 in twelve-knot southeast winds with a two-foot swell.
- At approximately 14:20 on July 6, the Avery Cross was forty-one nautical miles southeast of Crane Cove when the emergency occurred.
- By 14:30 sustained winds had reached 52 knots and seas built to eighteen feet in the shallows.
- Dean Donnelly activated the EPIRB at approximately 14:20; the beacon transmitted to the COSPAS-SARSAT network as designed.
- The EPIRB was still registered to the previous owner, Frank Deluca, and the Leeward Run (registration NC-4408), causing a thirty-four minute misdirection of rescue resources.
