She had been terrified about the money for two hours and I had no idea, because she thought it was written on her face.

Early spring, a rent house out toward the county line, tenant not owner, which changes the whole shape of a call. Young woman, maybe late twenties, a toddler asleep on the couch under a blanket with cartoon dinosaurs on it. The heat had quit and it had gotten down to forty seven in there overnight.

I did what I do. I looked at the furnace, found a failed inducer motor, and started explaining what an inducer does and why the pressure switch will not close without it.

And she stood there and nodded. And nodded. For a long time.

When I finally got to the number, she said, oh, and her whole body changed, and she said, I have been trying to figure out how to ask you what this was going to cost since you got here.

Two hours. She had been carrying that the entire time and I had read her as calm.

Here is the thing she said next, which is the actual episode.

She said, I figured you could tell.

There is a set of experiments on exactly this. Thomas Gilovich, Kenneth Savitsky and Victoria Medvec published a paper in 1998 called The Illusion of Transparency. In one version they had people drink a series of liquids, most of them fine, one of them genuinely foul, and try to keep a straight face. Then they asked the drinkers to guess how many observers would correctly pick out which drink was the bad one.

The drinkers wildly overestimated. They were certain their disgust was leaking out. It mostly was not. Observers did barely better than chance.

They ran it on other things too. People telling lies were sure they looked shifty. People who were nervous giving a talk were certain the room could see it. In every case the inner experience felt loud and the outward signal was faint.

Core line: "But I say, before I get into this, most of what goes wrong here lands between this and this, and if it turns out to be the expensive end I will tell you before I touch anything."
