Dawg Tracks – Season 4, Episode 2
What does it take to build a softball program ready to compete for championships?
In this episode of Dawg Tracks, host Noel T. Manning II welcomes new Gardner-Webb University Head Softball Coach Matt Burns for a conversation about his coaching journey, his people-first philosophy and his vision for the next chapter of Runnin' Bulldogs softball.
Burns shares how a career that began in baseball unexpectedly led him to softball—and why he would never go back. He also explains why Gardner-Webb checked every box when the opportunity came for his first collegiate head coaching position.
The conversation dives into Burns' approach to developing the current roster, recruiting, communication and building relationships with student-athletes. At the heart of his philosophy is a simple standard: "people first, athlete second." For Burns, ambitious goals must also be matched by the work required to reach them.
And the goals are ambitious.
Get to know Coach Matt Burns and hear why he believes the next chapter of Gardner-Webb softball can be something special.
