概要
Fear tightens when a silent tally appears in a hospital window: a photograph shows a woman pressing a torn paper with thirteen vertical marks against a fourth-floor pane, taken at 7:14 AM on May 9, 2011. That image launched eighty hours of interviews, two neurologists' debates, and an ethics committee review - so how did a woman recently unconscious know to count thirteen patients before anyone confirmed it?
In this episode, we tell what the photograph captured and the events leading up to it, tracing Gail Nelson’s life, the night her car left the road, and the first days in the hospital that preceded the window scene - could her awareness during those chaotic hours explain the tally?
Person: Gail Nelson
Date: May 9, 2011
Location: Harlow Memorial Hospital, Kellerton, Ohio
Event: Subarachnoid hemorrhage and subsequent window photograph
Witness: Jean Erickson (photographer)
- Photo taken at 7:14 AM on May 9, 2011 from the fourth level of a parking structure.
- Gail Nelson was 44 years old and had been unconscious for four days before the photograph.
- On May 2, 2011 at ~9:50 PM Gail’s car drifted across the lane and struck a drainage culvert; Walter Beem called 911 at 9:53 PM.
- Gail was moved out of the ICU into the step-down unit on May 7 and was awake and oriented that night in room 412.
- Nurse Andrea Foss recorded Gail saying she thought there were thirteen patients on the unit; the next morning the census board showed 13 of 17 beds occupied.
