The White Ship struck a rock and drowned Henry's heir, unraveling Stephen's crown
In this episode, we trace the chain of decisions and accidents that propelled Stephen of Blois from a French count’s son to a crowned king and then into a collapsing reign. We follow the White Ship disaster, the oaths sworn to Matilda, and the rapid, controversial seizure of power that raised the central question: what did Stephen inherit - and what did he break?
Person: Stephen of Blois
Event: Sinking of the White Ship
Date: November 25, 1120; February 2, 1141
Location: Barfleur; Lincoln
Status: Crowned king on December 22, 1135
- William Adelin boarded the White Ship at Barfleur with roughly three hundred people while the crew had been drinking.
- Stephen was scheduled to sail on the White Ship but stepped off at the last moment and watched it depart.
- Henry I made his daughter Matilda his heir and extracted three separate oaths from the barons in 1127, 1128, and 1131 that she would succeed him.
- After Henry’s death in December 1135, testimony that he revoked the succession at his deathbed was promoted by Bishop Henry of Blois, Stephen’s brother.
- Stephen crossed the Channel, rode to London, and was crowned at Westminster Abbey on December 22, 1135, weeks after Henry’s death.
