Content Advisory: This episode contains discussions of substance use, fentanyl, fatal overdose, grief, and guilt.
What if I'd knocked on the door? What if I'd stayed a little longer? What if I'd done something differently?
A few years ago, I lost a friend to a fentanyl-related overdose. What made his passing especially difficult was knowing that I had been sitting outside his house just days before learning what happened, potentially while he was inside overdosing.
For years, I carried the guilt of believing I could have prevented his death.
In this episode of Unfinished, I share that experience, the fear that kept me from opening up about it, and how my journey through sobriety has helped me begin understanding the difference between taking accountability for my actions and blaming myself for things I couldn't have known.
We talk about grief, hindsight, self-forgiveness, and the weight of unanswered questions.
Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself.
