What happens to the billable hour when AI helps lawyers finish work faster?

In Episode 3 of The War Room: Disrupted, Modern Family Law CEO M. David Johnson sits down with Andrew Legrand, founder of Spera Law Group, to discuss subscription legal services and what law firm pricing could look like beyond the hourly model.

Andrew shares how his firm provides ongoing legal support for businesses at a predictable monthly price and why subscriptions now account for about 70% of the firm’s revenue. He and M. David also talk about pricing legal work based on value, setting boundaries around subscription services, using technology to reduce turnaround times, and the ethical rules that can make alternative fee models harder to use in some states.

Their conversation explores an important question for the legal industry: If technology creates greater time-savings for lawyers, should clients benefit too?

In this episode:

• Why Spera Law Group moved away from relying only on hourly billing
• How subscription legal services work
• How firms can set prices and manage changes in workload
• Why ongoing counsel can help businesses spot problems earlier
• How AI is changing the value of a lawyer’s time
• The connection between new pricing models and access to legal help
• Why professional conduct rules may slow broader change

Who Will Own the Future of Law? | The War Room Disrupted | EP2

Could the rules meant to protect legal clients also be limiting better ways to serve them?

Artificial intelligence, outside investment, and new law firm ownership models are challenging how legal services have been delivered for generations. This conversation looks beyond the technology to a harder question: Is the traditional law firm model still meeting the needs of the people it serves?

In this episode of The War Room: Disrupted, Modern Family Law CEO M. David Johnson talks with Taylor Bell, founder of Arizona ABS Law and an appointed member of the Arizona Supreme Court’s Alternative Business Structures Committee.

Together, they examine Arizona’s Alternative Business Structure, also known as the ABS model. This regulatory framework allows nonlawyers to hold ownership interests in licensed law firms. It can give firms access to outside capital, business experience, and technology that may help them lower costs, offer new payment models, and reach people who might otherwise go without legal help.

But changing who can own a law firm also raises important questions about attorney independence, ethics, accountability, and client protection.

This is not simply a debate about law firm ownership. It is a debate about who benefits from the current system, what responsible innovation should look like, and whether the legal profession can adapt quickly enough to keep up with technology and changing client expectations.

In This Episode:

What an Alternative Business Structure is and how it works
Why Arizona removed its version of Rule 5.4
How nonlawyer ownership could change legal services
Why some attorneys and regulators strongly oppose ABS firms
Whether outside investment can help firms lower costs and expand access
How AI can support administrative and repeatable legal work
Why attorneys must remain responsible for judgment, advocacy, and legal decisions
The differences between ABS firms, MSOs, private equity, and venture capital
How technology could make lower-dollar legal matters financially possible
What ABS models could mean for family law
How multidisciplinary firms could combine legal, accounting, HR, and financial services
Why Big Law and smaller firms may view these changes differently
What the law firm of the future could look like
For attorneys, law firm leaders, legal technology founders, regulators, and investors, this episode offers a candid look at one of the most important debates shaping the business of law.

The legal industry will change. The bigger question is whether it will change in ways that give more people access to the legal help they need.
