Federal industry minister Melanie Joly says the Canadian steel industry will need government support to survive if Canadian suppliers are shut out of the U.S. market.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced today that Canada will be implementing new tariffs on foreign steel as well as federal government support for the Canadian steel industry. He said that there is no trade deal on the table that Canada can accept right now. The Carney government is working towards a deal by August 1 as Trump threatens 35% tariffs on all Canadian goods after that date.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Mark Carney publicly admitted that it's unlikely Canada will get a tariff-free trade deal with the United States. Carney made those comments to reporters ahead of a Cabinet meeting to discuss trade negotiations.
