    2026/09/01

None of us gets where we're going completely alone.

In this solo episode of The Unbreakable Advantage, Misty Carson shares the stories of two people who changed the trajectory of her life: her grandmother and a high school guidance counselor who fought for her when she was a pregnant, emancipated teenager trying to survive on her own.

Misty explores how support systems can change lives, why asking for help is a strength, and how adversity can build resilience, grit, empathy, resourcefulness, and leadership skills that traditional credentials don't always capture.

You'll also learn a simple exercise for reframing difficult experiences: instead of asking only what adversity took from you, ask what it built in you.

If someone once saw possibility in you when you couldn't see it yourself, this episode is also a challenge: be that person for someone else.

  • Surviving Attempted Murder | Turning Trauma into Strength with Heidi Damon
    2026/08/18
Send us Fan MailWhat happens when someone tries to take your life—but instead reveals the strength that was inside you all along? Some stories are difficult to hear. Others are impossible to forget. In this powerful episode of The Unbreakable Advantage Podcast, Misty Carson sits down with Heidi Damon to share a story of unimaginable violence, extraordinary courage, and the decision that changed everything. Heidi survived an attempted murder that could have ended her life. Instead of allowing that moment to define her as a victim, she chose to become a victor. Today, she’s using her voice to empower survivors, advocate for change, and remind others that what happened to them should never become who they are. This conversation isn’t simply about surviving trauma. It’s about reclaiming your identity. It’s about finding your voice. It’s about taking your power back. And most importantly… It’s about remembering that you have a name. In This Episode Misty and Heidi explore: • Heidi’s life before the attack and the community she loved serving • The nonprofit event that unknowingly became the backdrop to the day everything changed • Surviving an attempted murder and waking up to a completely different reality • The emotional impact of trauma after the distractions fade away • Why first responders and medical professionals need more trauma-informed training • The difference between being labeled a victim and choosing to become a victor • How writing and speaking became part of Heidi’s healing journey • The groundbreaking Victim Impact Statement that inspired survivors around the world • Why identity should never be determined by your worst day • The importance of surrounding yourself with people who add light instead of draining it • Finding your eternal purpose through your greatest adversity • Learning to remove limitations and step fully into the life you were created to live More Than a Survivor One of the most powerful themes throughout this episode is identity. Heidi refuses to allow the worst thing that happened to her to become the first thing people know about her. She isn’t an attack. She isn’t a case file. She isn’t a headline. She is Heidi Damon. That distinction changes everything. Instead of allowing labels to define her, she chose to define the labels. Instead of carrying shame, she carried courage. Instead of hiding her story, she used it to help countless others find the strength to tell theirs. The Power of Taking Your Voice Back A defining moment in Heidi’s healing came during her sentencing hearing. Standing in the courtroom, she chose to speak directly to the man who tried to take her life. She wasn’t there seeking revenge. She was reclaiming her power. She reminded the courtroom—and herself—that she had a name, a life, a purpose, and a future. While her attacker would forever be remembered by the crimes he committed… She would be remembered for the life she chose to build afterward. That single moment became one of the most powerful survivor impact statements ever shared publicly and inspired countless other survivors to find their own voices. The Difference Between Victim and Victor Throughout this conversation, Heidi shares why words matter. She believes labels shape identity. Calling someone a victim often keeps them tied to the worst moment of their life. Calling someone a victor reminds them they survived it. That simple shift changes how people see themselves. And ultimately… How they choose to move forward. About Heidi Damon Heidi Damon is a National Accounts leader, community advocate, future author, and aspiring international speaker. Following a brutal attempted murder, Heidi made the courageous decision to speak publicly about her experience. Since then, she has inspired survivors across the country to reclaim their voices, confront shame, and understand that trauma does not define their worth. Her mission is simple: To help people move from surviving… To living. Powerful Lessons from This Episode You have a choice. You cannot always control what happens to you. You can always choose what happens next. Perspective changes everything. Sometimes life redirects us because something greater is waiting in a different direction. Pain has purpose. Healing begins when we stop asking, “Why did this happen?” and begin asking, “What can I build because of it?” Your words matter. The way you speak to yourself becomes the way you experience your life. Community matters. The people around you either expand your future or shrink it. Choose wisely. Favorite Quotes “I have a name.” “Things that happen to you do not define you. You define them.” “Don’t let someone else’s actions become your identity.” “You don’t have baggage. You have lessons.” “Life isn’t happening to you. Sometimes it’s ...

  • The Whisper vs. The Alarm | Why the Life You’re Meant to Live Starts with One Courageous Decision
    2026/08/11
Send us Fan MailWe’ve all felt it. That quiet whisper telling us there’s more. More purpose. More impact. More life waiting for us. Yet somehow the alarms of fear, security, expectations, and self-doubt become so loud that we stop listening. In this deeply personal solo episode, Misty Carson shares the biggest leap of her life—walking away from a successful corporate career to build The Unbreakable Advantage Institute from the ground up. This isn’t a story about quitting your job. It’s a story about finally betting on yourself. About learning the difference between reckless faith and courageous action. About recognizing that the greatest risk isn’t changing—it’s ignoring the life you were created to live. For the first time, Misty records completely without a script, sharing the raw thoughts, fears, victories, and lessons she’s experiencing in real time as she builds a movement dedicated to helping people transform adversity into their greatest advantage. If you’ve ever felt stuck between comfort and calling… If you’ve ever wondered whether it’s too late… If you’ve ever heard the whisper but were afraid to answer… This conversation is for you. In This Episode • Why your whisper eventually becomes impossible to ignore • The difference between fear and recklessness • Why purpose often feels terrifying before it feels exciting • The hidden cost of staying comfortable • How adversity conditions us to play small • Why self-worth matters more than self-confidence • How to stop allowing other people’s fears to become your limitations • Why collecting evidence is more powerful than believing your emotions • The danger of living by the alarm instead of the whisper • Building in silence versus building in public • Why authentic alignment creates extraordinary opportunities • How one conversation with Misty’s daughter changed everything • Learning to trust yourself before the world understands your vision • Why consistency matters more than motivation • The power of tiny courageous decisions • Why extraordinary lives are built one small choice at a time • How to know when it’s finally time to bet on yourself Memorable Quotes “The whisper doesn’t disappear because you ignore it. It simply gets louder.” “You don’t need the entire staircase. You only need the courage to take the next step.” “Fear and recklessness are not the same thing.” “Every meaningful leap I’ve ever made started as a whisper.” “The world doesn’t get to write your story. You do.” “Pressure doesn’t tell you who you are. It reveals who you’ve become.” “You can be grateful for what you have and still believe you’re capable of more.” “We collect limitations like souvenirs and then wonder why we stop growing.” “The loudest liar in your life often lives inside your own head.” “You don’t have to see Floor 10 to leave Floor 4.” “We were not broken. We were being built.” Warrior Challenge Tonight, before you go to bed, ask yourself one question: Where is life whispering to you that you’re pretending not to hear? Don’t overthink it. You already know the answer. Then ask yourself: What’s one small step I can take tomorrow? Not the entire plan. Just the next courageous step. Because extraordinary lives aren’t built in giant leaps. They’re built one authentic decision at a time. • What If It’s Still Possible? | Finding Hope, Healing, and Purpose After Trauma with Tonya Ruble Richter
    2026/08/04
Send us Fan MailWhat if the hardest chapter of your life wasn’t the end of your story—but the beginning of your purpose? Trauma changes us. Loss changes us. Grief changes us. The question is whether those experiences will become the weight that keeps us down or the fuel that helps us rise. In this deeply personal episode of The Unbreakable Advantage Podcast, Misty Carson sits down with Tonya Ruble Richter, CEO of Ever Forward, a foster care organization providing foster placements, residential group homes, counseling, and trauma-informed services for children and families impacted by abuse, neglect, and adversity. Tonya’s story is one of extraordinary resilience. After surviving childhood sexual abuse, losing her best friend at a young age, navigating unhealthy relationships, becoming a widow, and facing more loss than most people experience in a lifetime, she made a decision that continues to shape thousands of lives today. She refused to let pain have the final word. Instead, she chose purpose. Together, Misty and Tonya explore what healing really looks like—not as a destination where pain magically disappears, but as the daily decision to keep moving forward one step at a time. This conversation is about more than trauma. It’s about possibility. It’s about perspective. It’s about learning that while we cannot control what happens to us, we can absolutely control what we build because of it. In This Episode Misty and Tonya have an honest conversation about: Surviving childhood trauma without allowing it to define your future Why grief never truly leaves—but becomes something we learn to carry The hidden connection between anger, protection, and healing Why empathy and grit often grow together Learning to process pain instead of burying it The importance of journaling, therapy, and healthy emotional outlets The science and power of post-traumatic growth Why community matters when you’re rebuilding your life How changing your perspective changes your future The importance of taking the next step instead of trying to see the entire path Why boundaries are essential for healing What foster youth truly need beyond housing and services Why healing isn’t about forgetting your past—it’s about deciding what you’ll do with it A Conversation About Possibility Throughout this episode, one message continues to surface. It’s still possible. It’s possible to heal after abuse. It’s possible to love again after devastating loss. It’s possible to build a meaningful life after trauma. It’s possible to become the person your younger self desperately needed. Both Misty and Tonya openly discuss how the internal battle never completely disappears. The self-doubt. The fear. The grief. The moments where life once again asks you to be stronger than you ever wanted to be. Yet they also remind us that resilience isn’t the absence of pain. Resilience is choosing to stand back up. Again. And again. And again. About Tonya Ruble Richter Tonya Ruble Richter serves as the CEO of Ever Forward, a foster care organization dedicated to helping children and families impacted by abuse, neglect, and trauma. Ever Forward provides: Foster care placements Residential group homes Counseling services Trauma-informed care Family support programs Community-based services designed to help children heal and move toward brighter futures Every aspect of the organization reflects one simple belief: No matter what you’ve been through, you can always move toward something more beautiful. That belief isn’t just part of Ever Forward’s mission. It’s the way Tonya has chosen to live her own life. Memorable Moments One of the most powerful parts of this conversation is the reminder that healing doesn’t happen all at once. You don’t need to know how to get from A to Z. You only need enough courage to take the next step. Another unforgettable moment comes when Tonya describes grief like a marble inside a jar. In the beginning, grief fills every part of your life. Over time, the grief doesn’t disappear. You simply become stronger at carrying it. Misty expands on this idea by sharing one of the foundational questions behind The Unbreakable Advantage framework: Instead of asking… “What did this take from me?” Ask… “What did this build in me?” That simple shift has the power to transform how we see every challenge we’ve ever faced. Favorite Quotes “You cannot always choose what happens to you. You can choose what you build from it.” “You don’t have to know how to get from A to Z. You only need to know how to get to B.” “Healing isn’t forgetting your story. Healing is deciding what you’ll build with it.” “Sometimes your greatest strength is born from the thing you never wanted to survive.” “You have every reason to be angry. But your power lives in what you choose to do next.” “We were not ...

  • Your Mind Knows but Your Body Doesn't Follow | Ben Oofana on Why Awareness Isn't Enough to Heal
    2026/07/28
Send us Fan MailA note before you listen. This conversation touches on childhood trauma, abuse, destructive relationships, and grief. Please take care of yourself as you listen, and if any of it hits close to home, know that you are not alone and support is available. EPISODE DESCRIPTION Ben Oofana spent his mid twenties caught in a series of destructive relationships before he understood that he was reenacting the traumas of his childhood and adolescence. That realization set him on a lifelong path of healing. Drawn to indigenous cultures from an early age, he left Texas at seventeen to live among a community of Kiowa and Kiowa Apache people in Oklahoma, where he apprenticed under Horace Daukei, one of the last surviving traditional Kiowa doctors. He has returned to the Wichita Mountains to fast and vision quest, spring and fall, for decades, and has also trained for years in the Taoist internal arts of Xin Yi Quan and Baguazhang, along with time spent living and working in Sri Lanka. In this deep, unhurried conversation, Ben and Misty explore why intellectual understanding is not enough to change behavior, and why so much of our unresolved pain lives in the body rather than the mind. Ben explains how emotional wounding becomes a backlog of undigested emotion, how conditioning pulls us back into old patterns the moment we are under pressure, and why awareness has to be paired with actually feeling and moving through what we carry. Together they talk about the comfort we find in discomfort, the courage it takes to leave the old familiar blanket in the corner long enough to build a new one, and how digesting pain rather than escaping it turns it into fuel for growth. They also look honestly at hustle culture, the always on digital era, and what stillness and presence can restore. If you have ever known better and still felt yourself repeating the pattern, this episode is for you. KEY LISTENER TAKEAWAYS • Why awareness alone rarely changes behavior, and what has to happen in the body before a pattern can actually shift. • How undigested emotion accumulates over a lifetime, and why so much of it surfaces only when we are under pressure or in adversity.• The difference between suppressing an emotion and digesting it, and how the second one turns pain into fuel for growth. • Why the discomfort we keep returning to feels like an old familiar blanket, and what it takes to build a new source of comfort from within. • How stillness, presence, and regulation quietly interrupt the emotional cycles and generational patterns most people pass on without realizing it. CHAPTER MARKERS Timestamps are estimated from the flow of the conversation against an approximate runtime of 100 minutes. You're digesting it. You're transforming it. It's becoming fuel for growth.” Ben Oofana “That's when the patterns began to be dismantled, and I experienced real change that I couldn't get just from intellectual understanding.” Ben Oofana “You strike one tuning fork, and the next one starts vibrating.” Ben Oofana “The willingness to face life head on, to embrace what life brings to you. That is where my unbreakable advantage comes in.” Ben Oofana SIT WITH IT Ben and Misty talked about the old familiar blanket, the discomfort we return to simply because it is what our body knows. So sit with this one. What is the blanket you keep reaching for, and what might it feel like to leave it in the corner long enough to build a new one from the inside? • Break or Build | Sims Tillerson on Addiction, Dominion, and the Light on the Other Side
    2026/07/21
Send us Fan MailA note before you listen. This conversation includes honest discussion of childhood sexual abuse, addiction, and recovery. Please take care of yourself as you listen, and if any of it hits close to home, know that you are not alone and support is available. EPISODE DESCRIPTION Sims Tillerson has spent more than a decade inside the world of employee benefits, from the smallest startups to the Fortune 500. But the reason Misty wanted him in this room has nothing to do with his resume. Sims walked through years of darkness that started when he was thirteen, and he came out the other side carrying a truth he lives every single day: you are not alone, and there is a light. In this episode, Sims and Misty go straight into the parts most people keep private. Sims opens up about the complex PTSD he carries from childhood abuse, the years he spent numbing a brain he did not yet understand, and the long, unglamorous road to sobriety that ended with his last drink in October 2018. He shares the moment his story shifted from one of heartbreak to what he now calls dominion, and why he refuses to let the worst things that happened to him become the whole of who he is. Two survivors turned thrivers talk honestly about harm reduction, mental fitness, and why the top performer in your company might be the one quietly struggling. Sims makes the case that sales and mental health belong on the same stage, that value comes from who you are and not only what you produce, and that the pause between a stimulus and your reaction is where you take back control. This is a raw, hopeful conversation about turning pain into power and building something brighter on the other side. KEY LISTENER TAKEAWAYS • Why performing at a high level tells you nothing about what someone is carrying underneath, and why your top seller may be the one who needs to be seen most. • The difference recovery in pieces makes, and why harm reduction is a win worth being proud of rather than an all or nothing demand. • How the pause between a stimulus and your reaction becomes the place where you break old patterns and choose your response.• What it means to shift a story from heartbreak to dominion, and how perspective built through hardship becomes an enhanced capacity for gratitude. • Why your worth is not something you earn by producing, and what it takes to believe you have value before you have done anything for anyone. CHAPTER MARKERS Timestamps are estimated from the flow of the conversation against a typical runtime for the show. Fine tune once the final cut is timed. 0:00 Welcome and why Sims is in this room 4:10 The many hats and the red thread of storytelling 6:15 The season that ran from thirteen to twenty six 9:20 Naming the root: complex PTSD and coming forward 15:35 The turning points and the shift to dominion 19:45 The hard, unglamorous work of getting sober 24:00 Recovery in pieces and the case for harm reduction 27:00 Resilience, perspective, and gratitude 30:10 When you first believe you can overcome anything 33:15 How his story changed the way he sees the industry 37:25 Preventative mental health, mental fitness, and breath work 41:35 The pause between stimulus and reaction 43:40 Why sales and mental health belong on the same stage 46:50 What Sims needs his thirteen year old self to know 48:20 The signature closing three 51:30 Where to connect with Sims STANDOUT QUOTES “I didn't want to have to call my drug dealer every time a bad thought came into my brain. I wanted more control.” Sims Tillerson “Just because people perform doesn't mean anything about their mental health.” Sims Tillerson “The most impactful skill I ever learned for my mental health is breath work.” Sims Tillerson “The things that happened to me were not my fault. But how I choose to respond and take care of them, that part is mine.” Sims Tillerson “I wish it didn't happen. But now I have this advantage. I am resilient, and I can win as a result.” Sims Tillerson SIT WITH IT Sims said his hardest ongoing work is believing he has value before he has produced anything for anyone. So sit with this one.
