  • Trucking and Labour Laws

In the 1980s, at just 22 years old, she stepped into an industry where women were not expected to belong. Coming from a family that believed a woman’s place was in the kitchen, she faced strong opposition at home — but she didn’t listen. She got behind the wheel of a truck and started her journey into trucking.

From learning to drive and run as a team with male co-drivers, to making deliveries and pulling into shippers who wondered, “How is this girl going to back that truck in?” — she faced challenges at every turn.

But her story didn’t stop behind the wheel.

She started seeing how truck drivers were being treated and how much of their time and hard work was going unpaid. Waiting on the side of the highway because of a breakdown? No pay. Waiting for work? No pay. Hours spent working, but not being properly compensated.

That’s when she started asking questions.

She challenged the system, got involved with labour laws, fought for truck drivers’ rights, and pushed back against companies that were taking advantage of drivers.

One question she asked says it all: “If you come to work and your computer doesn’t turn on, do you still get paid? So why should a truck driver sit on the side of the highway and not get paid?”

This is the story of a woman who entered trucking when few expected women to do it — and eventually became a voice for the rights of the very drivers she once fought to become. From the 1980s trucking world to Labour laws, unpaid waiting time, driver pay, company practices, and the battles that changed her life — this episode goes far beyond trucking. It’s about standing up, asking questions, and fighting for what’s right.

  • From International Student To A Truck Driver
    2026/09/27

Harleen came to Canada as an international student with no family here, no one waiting to pick her up, and no idea how difficult the journey ahead would be. From staying in hotels and figuring out life on her own, to studying, searching for work, washing dishes, working in restaurants, fast food, and labor jobs — she did whatever it took to survive and build a future. Then she found trucking. Getting her license was only the beginning.

As a woman entering a male-dominated industry, she called hundreds of trucking companies looking for someone willing to give her a chance. When she finally found a job, the real challenge began — learning to drive and deliver loads on her own, navigating unfamiliar places, walking through truck stops at night, and dealing with unwanted attention and personal questions along the way. This is the story of Harleen her journey from international student to professional truck driver — the struggles, the sacrifices, the moments that tested her, and the determination that kept her moving forward.

International Student to a Truck Driver — one woman’s journey through Canada, trucking, and everything in between.
