The Tow Truck That Drove a Quiet Man Into the Cornfield
In this episode, we follow the timeline from a simple roadside tow request to the discovery of a bowling league ID in a Nebraska cornfield and the investigator who threads those moments together. What choices and ordinary trusts turned a routine night into a case that won’t let go?
Person: Gregory Porter
Person: Leon Chambers
Person: Todd Coleman
Date: April 29 (breakdown call) and May 7 (card found)
Location: CR-nine, Harlan County, Nebraska
- Meter reader Leon Chambers found a laminated bowling ID standing upright in a cornrow 340 feet from the road in a field that had been planted two days earlier.
- Gregory Porter, 54, missed his first Thursday bowling night in three years after his 1997 Ford Ranger broke down on CR-nine.
- Porter called Coleman Ag Services at 6:47 p.m.; the call lasted 2 minutes 11 seconds and is logged on his phone.
- Todd Coleman’s tow truck logged 47 miles that night; Coleman told investigators the truck’s GPS had been offline for calibration and no records of calibration exist.
- Investigator Marcia Norris built her early case around schedules, call logs, and the fact that a man who never missed bowling simply stopped showing up.
