A Quinault story recorded on the Washington coast follows Sisemo, the husband of Thunder’s daughter, as Thunder tests whether he is worthy of a place in the family. Sisemo is sent for snow from five mountain tops, then for mountain lions and bears. He enters a cedar log that Thunder expects will hold him. Finally, he travels to the world below, where a guarded ball of light is rolled between its keepers. This episode follows Livingston Farrand’s fuller English publication from 1902, while carefully distinguishing it from his shorter English field note made in 1897. It is one historical record of one Quinault telling, preserved through collecting, publication, and later retelling. It is not a single story shared by all Indigenous peoples of North America. Move slowly through a story of difficult family judgment, underestimated ability, snow gathered into one hand, a cedar log carried home, and light brought upward beneath the wings of Thunder.
