  • 🎬 The Third Reel Patreon Freebie: Brokeback Mountain
    2026/08/31

So… we were supposed to be bringing you Episode 100 this week.

But because we are nothing if not committed to making this monumental milestone absolutely perfect, we decided to take an entire extra week to get it right.

Which means, naturally, we’re celebrating by giving you a Patreon freebie about Brokeback Mountain.

That’s right. While you patiently wait for our 100th episode, enjoy this very special episode from the archives as Dan, Rachael and Dale head into the Wyoming wilderness to discuss Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 2005 drama, Brokeback Mountain.

We’re talking Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Williams, forbidden love, devastating life choices, cowboys, questionable camping arrangements and one of the most emotionally destructive films ever to make an entire generation insist they were “just watching a cowboy film”.

Expect our usual combination of film chat, questionable opinions, unnecessary tangents and the sort of analysis that definitely could have been completed without taking a week off.

If you enjoy Brokeback Mountain, Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ang Lee, film reviews, movie podcasts and three people attempting to make sense of cinema, you’re in the right place.

And if you’re wondering where Episode 100 is…

    It’s coming.

We promise it’ll be worth the wait.

  • #99 - Twilight Saga: Eclipse Review | Can Twilight Finally Redeem Itself? 🌑🐺🧛
    2026/08/24

The gang is back in Forks, and after the frankly devastating experience that was New Moon, expectations are… somewhere beneath the floorboards.

Our last Twilight review left us with one major question: can this franchise actually produce a film we genuinely like? Even Rachael, our resident self-confessed Twilight fan and designated expert on all things Edward, Bella and aggressively dramatic staring, wasn't exactly singing New Moon's praises.

    BUT… there is hope.

Because Eclipse is Rachael's favourite book in the entire Twilight Saga. So surely this is where things turn around, right? Right?! Surely we can't spend another episode complaining about vampires, werewolves, teenage romance and the general lack of anyone making sensible decisions?

In this episode of The Third Reel, we dive into The Twilight Saga: Eclipse to find out whether the third instalment finally delivers the goods. With Victoria on the hunt, the Cullens facing an army of newborn vampires, Jacob still Jacob, Edward still Edward, and Bella somehow having to choose between two supernatural men while the rest of us wonder why this is considered a difficult decision, there's plenty to discuss.

Will Eclipse finally earn a positive review? Does Rachael defend her favourite Twilight book adaptation? Has the saga finally found its footing? Or are we once again asking ourselves why we've willingly returned to Forks?

  • #98 - Top 100 Films Ever: Part 3 | The Power Goes to Their Heads 🎬👑
    2026/08/17

    The chaos continues.

Last week, Legally Blonde somehow climbed all the way to #2 on our Top 100 Films Ever, proving once and for all that this list will do absolutely anything but make sense. 🤷‍♂️

Despite the questionable decision-making, plenty of great films joined the list. But as the rankings take shape, so does the animosity between our hosts. Friendships are being tested. Opinions are being questioned. Legally Blonde is somehow above The Dark Knight.

Here’s the list as it stands:

    1. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
    2. Legally Blonde
    3. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
    4. The Dark Knight
    5. Saving Private Ryan
    6. Jurassic Park
    7. The Silence of the Lambs
    8. It’s a Wonderful Life
    9. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
    10. Whiplash
    11. Shaun of the Dead
    12. Interview with the Vampire
    13. Shrek
    14. Spirited Away
    15. Superbad
    16. The Matrix
    17. Mean Girls
    18. The Iron Giant

    So, what happens this time?

As the chaos continues, our list of 18 becomes 27... or does it?

Because this week, new powers enter the game. 👀

The rankings are about to get even more unpredictable. 🎥

  • #97 - Top 100 Films Ever Pt. 2: The List Strikes Back
    2026/08/10

    The chaos continues 🎬

Part 2 of our Top 100 Films of All Time saga is here, where the list gets tighter, the opinions get louder, and the sabotage gets… frankly, personal. This isn’t just a ranking. It’s a full-blown cinematic turf war.

    Current standings include:

    1. The Dark Knight

    2. Saving Private Ryan

    3. Jurassic Park

    4. It’s a Wonderful Life

    5. Shaun of the Dead

    6. Shrek

    7. The Iron Giant

    8. Mean Girls

    9. …and yes… The Matrix (we’re still not over it 😵)

Because in one of the most unhinged moves in podcast history, Rachael came in swinging and dumped The Matrix at the bottom like it owed her money. Can it rise from the digital ashes? Or is this the darkest timeline?

Expect bold picks, brutal vetoes, questionable tactics, and at least one moment that makes us all reconsider doing this format ever again.

If you love film debates, iconic movie rankings, and watching friendships hang by a thread… this one’s for you.

🎧 Hit play and witness the list evolve (or completely derail)

  • #96 - The Odyssey Review | In Short, Watch it Now
    2026/08/03

It topped all of our most anticipated lists at the start of the year… and now The Odyssey has finally landed.

A couple of weeks into its cinematic run, with plenty more time still to catch it on the big screen, we’ve sat down for a Reel Kwik to give our full thoughts. And without spoiling too much up top… yeah, we loved it. Simple as that.

Join all three of us as we dive into what makes this one so special, from the scale and spectacle (yes, we’re talking IMAX) to the performances, themes, and everything in between. There’s a lot to unpack here, and while we couldn’t cover absolutely everything, we’ve given it our best shot.

Haven’t seen it yet? This is your sign. Get yourself to the cinema, and if you can, go big with IMAX.

As always with Reel Kwik: we kick things off spoiler-free with our recommendations, before the klaxon sounds and we head into full spoiler territory for deeper discussion and final scores.

  • #95 - New Moon, New Mood? | Twilight Saga Review
    2026/07/27

Twilight landed with all the grace of a vampire in Crocs… so naturally, we’re back for round two. 🌑

In this episode of The Third Reel, Dale, Dan, and Rachael dive headfirst into The Twilight Saga: New Moon — the broodiest, slowest, most “stare out of a window while sad indie music plays” sequel in cinematic history.

After both Dale and Dan slapped Twilight with a lukewarm 5/10, the big question is: does New Moon rise from the ashes… or just sulk in the corner for two hours? Rachael isn’t optimistic — it’s her least favourite book, and she’s calling the film a full-on snooze fest. Confidence is high. Spirits are low. Team morale? Questionable.

    Expect:

    • Painfully intense eye contact

    • Shirtless Jacob doing overtime

    • Bella inventing new levels of dramatic sadness

    • And three hosts slowly losing their minds

But… could this be the episode where Team Edward gets benched and Team Jacob steals the show? Stranger things have happened. Probably.

🎙️ If you love movie reviews, chaotic debates, and brutally honest takes on iconic films, you’re in the right place.

FULL SPOILERS FOR NEW MOON IN THIS EPISODE. You have been warned.

  • #93 - Top 100 Films of All Time (According To Us)
    2026/07/20

Welcome to a brand new format from The Third Reel: our quest to build the Top 100 Films of All Time (According to Us)… and yes, it’s exactly as unhinged as it sounds.

This isn’t your polite, panel-based, “let’s all agree and hold hands” kind of list. Absolutely not. This is cinema carnage. Rankings are thrown, stolen, boosted, and occasionally launched out of a moving vehicle.

Each episode, the three of us bring three films each to the table. The twist? We can place them anywhere we want on the Top 100. No committee approval. No democracy. Just pure, unchecked cinematic ego.

But wait, there’s more chaos in the chamber.

Every episode, we’re each given a random power that can completely flip the board. Want to bump your favourite up three spots? Done. Think a film is sitting far too high? Drag it down into the depths. Fancy swapping two films just to watch the world burn? Go on then.

It’s part movie debate, part strategy game, part glorious nonsense.

Think of it like a game show… if the prize is eternal bragging rights and the battleground is the greatest films ever made (according to whoever happens to be holding the power at the time).

    🎬 New format

    🎲 New rules every episode

    🔥 Maximum chaos

    Welcome to the Top 100.

  • #92 - Disclosure Day Review – All the Right Ingredients… So What Went Wrong?
    2026/07/13

It’s Disclosure Day… and Spielberg is back in the sci-fi cockpit 🚀

In this Kwik Review Reel, we’re diving into one of our most anticipated films of 2026. On paper, it’s basically a cinematic bingo card: Spielberg? Check. Stacked cast? Check. Return to big, bold sci-fi? Oh, absolutely check. The trailer had us hook, line, and fully abducted.

    But here’s the thing… hype is a dangerous co-pilot.

With expectations orbiting somewhere near Jupiter, does Disclosure Day actually deliver the spectacle, wonder, and emotional gut-punch we’ve come to expect from Spielberg at his best? Or does it drift into that slightly awkward corner of his recent filmography where things look great but don’t quite feel great?

Join us as we put it under the microscope (and maybe a UFO spotlight), breaking down performances, visuals, story beats, and where it lands in the ever-expanding Spielberg sci-fi rankings.

Is this a close encounter of the brilliant kind… or should it have stayed classified?
