The Strategic Thinker is a sanctuary for your mind. A calm space, away from the noise, where you can slow down, think more deeply, and reset your direction. Hosted by Allen, each conversation is designed to help you approach life, work, and decisions with more intention and more clarity. At the heart of the show is Path to Greatness, a series exploring the decisions, disciplines, and directions that shaped history's most extraordinary figures. This is thinking, for those who take it seriously.Allen L. 社会科学

  • What Is This Effort For? | Working Hard on the Wrong Problem
    2026/10/13

When you are working hard on something, how often do you stop to ask what the extra effort is actually achieving?

In aerospace engineering, ninety-nine percent is a failure, and the extra effort is obviously worth it. That standard left me with a question I only fully understood much later: good enough for what?

This Spark follows that question from aircraft components to the analytical models I built afterward, and the hours I spent making them easy to hand over. Watching those handovers happen showed me the real obstacle was somewhere else entirely.

It is a short reflection on effort as a matter of direction rather than quantity, and on how to tell whether the extra work is reaching the thing you think it is.

💡 Pause and reflect: Think of something you keep improving. What is that extra effort for?

If these conversations are adding something to your journey, reserve your seat in the sanctuary by following the show wherever you listen.

  • Why Walking Helps You Think | The Gaps That Used to Be Free
    2026/09/29

When was the last time you did nothing, and let your thoughts wander?

The ninety seconds waiting for the kettle. The lift. The queue at the supermarket. Those gaps used to be free, and something was happening in them.

This episode began as one thing and became another. I went looking for what unoccupied time actually does, expecting to find one answer, and found something more interesting.

The strongest evidence points toward walking rather than sitting still. A large review this year pulled together twenty-three studies and found that walking improves your ability to generate options, though not your ability to choose between them. Which turns out to be a genuinely useful distinction when you are stuck.

We also look at why boredom is a signal rather than a strategy, what actually produces a wandering mind, and why the real obstacle is that empty time has come to feel like waste.

There is a personal story in here too, about a piece of consulting advice that arrived as fear and became something more accurate once I stayed with it.

💡 Pause and reflect: When did you last let a thought finish?

  • How to Say No Without Losing the Relationship | What Deserves a Yes?
    2026/09/15

Can saying yes to something good still take you in the wrong direction?

Bad opportunities are easy to decline. The hard ones arrive as genuinely good ideas, from people you respect, at the wrong moment. Each one makes sense on its own. The difficulty is what they add up to.

This episode began with a gift. A Secret Santa during my consulting years, a large red button with NO printed across the top, and a private explanation from the colleague who chose it that I have been thinking about ever since.

We explore why some yeses are how you discover what you are capable of, and others are drift. Why the difficulty of declining is rarely analytical. And what a thoughtful no actually sounds like, including the wording, and how it changes depending on who is asking.

💡 Pause and reflect: Which yes in your life is helping you grow, and which one are you continuing simply because saying no feels harder?

If these conversations are adding something to your journey, reserve your seat in the sanctuary by following the show wherever you listen.
