In this episode, we explore the life and message of Isaiah, the son of Amoz, who ministered during the reigns of four kings of Judah, spanning the turbulent period of the Assyrian threat and the eventual fall of the northern kingdom of Israel. Tradition holds that he lived into the reign of Hezekiah and was likely martyred by being "sawn in two" during the reign of the wicked King Manasseh.
One of the most pivotal moments of his life was his call vision, recorded in Isaiah 6, where he saw the Lord seated on a high and exalted throne, surrounded by seraphim proclaiming "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory." This vision of God's holiness made Isaiah profoundly aware of his own unworthiness and the need for purification, which he received when a seraph touched his lips with a burning coal. He then responded to God's call, declaring, "Here I am; send me!"
Throughout his ministry, Isaiah delivered messages of judgment against sin. He denounced the hypocrisy of the people, who offered sacrifices while ignoring justice and mercy. He warned of coming destruction from the Assyrians and other nations, yet his prophecy is not all doom. Woven throughout his warnings is a message of hope for a faithful remnant. He prophesied the birth of Immanuel to King Ahaz as a sign of God's presence with his people. And most remarkably, he wrote the "Servant Songs," especially Isaiah 53, which describes a "Suffering Servant" wounded for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities—a prophecy that the early church and many Christians believe is fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The book of Isaiah is often described as a "mini-Bible," with its 66 chapters mirroring the 66 books of the Bible, shifting from a focus on judgment in the first 39 chapters to a message of comfort and redemption in the final 27. He speaks of a New Heavens and a New Earth, and his oracles are full of the hope of a future time of peace when the knowledge of the Lord will fill the earth.
