A new report from SafeHome.org ranks every state and Washington, D.C., on LGBTQ+ safety using a combination of state laws and FBI hate crime reporting data.

The findings raise a larger question than who ranked first or last:

Have we reached a point where civil rights, legal protections, and personal security depend more on geography than citizenship?

For Tennesseans, the report ranks Tennessee 47th in the nation, receiving an F grade, citing a combination of state policy and legal protections as key factors.

Whether you agree with the report’s conclusions or not, it highlights an important reality: Americans can have very different experiences depending on which side of a state line they live.
