In this fourth episode of The Standard Fare, we’re talking with Mac Prichard, owner of Mac's List in Portland, Oregon. Mac's List is the Pacific Northwest's premiere job board that connects employers with local talent. Mac built his career and business on a commitment to service, relationships, and community-building.

Previously, Mac founded and operated Prichard Communications, a public relations agency that worked with social change makers across the country. Prichard was the natural evolution of Mac's 40-year career in public relations and communications, starting on the East Coast where Mac worked in communications and public affairs for a Congressional campaign, a major city infrastructure project, and a state agency. Later, when Mac came to Oregon, he worked for some of Oregon’s most recognizable law makers.

Mac built Prichard to serve organizations with a mission, and was proud to serve top-tier nonprofits and foundations including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Northwest Health Foundation, Meyer Memorial Trust, and more.

In this third episode of The Standard Fare, we’re talking with Joe Harrison, co-owner of Farmer’s Union Coffee Roasters in Eugene. Joe discusses the pros and cons of owning a local business, and the challenges and rewards of providing the best cup of coffee in town.

Growing up in wine country, Joe knew many farmers and winemakers. His Dad loved to taste local wine, so they went on many tastings frequently. Joe learned quickly that a lot of people who attended these events were not just there to sample the wine—they were there to make friends, too! They'd talk about their families, their hobbies, and all sorts of other things as they sipped their glasses. Later in his life, he discovered that there was something else that people enjoyed doing together: drinking coffee! Joe first fell in love with coffee while working at Alpen Sierra Coffee Company in South Lake Tahoe, where he began roasting on a break from college.

They cupped a natural Ethiopian one day, and it changed his life. After that, he moved to Portola Coffee Lab as a barista and then advanced to roasting with Portola. While there, he coached and competed in regional and national coffee competitions including the US Barista Championship and the US Brewers Cup. It was during this time that Scott Rao taught him an incredible amount about roasting and tasting coffee—and eventually they won Roast Magazine's Roaster of the Year award in 2015 at Portola Coffee Lab.

In this second episode of The Standard Fare, we’re continuing our discussion on careers in journalism by talking to Dan Morrison, senior instructor at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication. Morrison shares about his early career as a photojournalist, his transition into professional teaching, and his many adventures along the way.

After working as a stringer for the Associated Press for four years, Dan Morrison began working for magazines as a writer-photographer. He has worked in over 31 foreign countries, including seven war zones. Since filing his first online feature story from Kenya in 1995, he has published from countries around the world, including Australia, Morocco, Mongolia, and Patagonia. In 2000, Morrison accompanied an expedition to Mt. Everest and filed online stories for more than two months from base camp as the expedition put two climbers on the summit. In addition to teaching at the School of Journalism and Communication, Morrison continues his freelance work, which now includes producing multimedia clips for KVAL television’s website.

In this first episode of The Standard Fare, we're talking to broadcast radio journalist and reporter, Brian Bull. Bull shares about his career path and what it's like to be a journalist today. Bull is a reporter with KLCC News, a member station of National Public Radio (NPR) in Eugene, Oregon.

In his 25+ years as a public media journalist, he's worked at NPR, Twin Cities Public Television, South Dakota Public Broadcasting, Wisconsin Public Radio, and ideastream in Cleveland. His reporting has netted dozens of accolades, including four national Edward R. Murrow Awards and 19 regional awards, the Ohio Associated Press' Best Reporter Award, Best Radio Reporter from the Native American Journalists Association, and the PRNDI/NEFE Award for Excellence in Consumer Finance Reporting.

An enrolled member of the Nez Perce Tribe, Bull has worked with NPR's Next Generation Project geared towards diversifying the ranks of tomorrow's journalists. He's been a guest faculty instructor at the Poynter Institute on covering underrepresented communities. He served as chair for Vision Maker Media, which supports authentic programs and documentaries produced by Native Americans. Bull has a Master's Degree in American Journalism Online from New York University, and a B.A. from Macalester College where he studied Psychology, English, and Dramatic Arts.
