Episode 9: When Good Intentions Still Cause Damage

Most of us would rather explain what we meant than confront what actually happened.

    We meant to help.
    We meant to protect.
    We meant to lead well.
    We meant to love.

And sometimes, despite all of that, somebody still got hurt.

In this episode of The Slow Drift, Dr. Joshua Brown explores one of the hardest parts of accountability: learning to care about impact without pretending intention does not matter, and owning what is actually ours without accepting every accusation or someone else’s interpretation of our motives.

From relationships and defensiveness to leadership and organizational culture, this conversation asks a deceptively simple question:

What part of this is mine?

Good intentions matter. They just do not get the final vote.

Sometimes the part that is unfair becomes the excuse we use to avoid the part that is true. Growth begins when we can stop defending the whole story long enough to own our part of it.

Own the behavior without adopting the motive.

  • The Slow Drift - The Lonliness of Being the Strong One - episode 7

What happens when you become the person everyone trusts, calls, needs, and leans on... but you’re not sure where you’re supposed to go when life gets heavy for you?

In this episode of The Slow Drift, Dr. Joshua Brown explores the quiet loneliness that can come with being dependable, capable, and strong. Why do we hide our own needs? Why is receiving often harder than giving? And what happens when strength becomes something we feel obligated to perform?

This one is personal, funny, honest, and probably uncomfortably familiar.

Because being surrounded isn’t the same thing as being known.

Strength without somewhere safe to put the weight eventually becomes isolation.

If this episode hits home, send it to the strong person in your life who may need someone to ask, “But how are you doing?”

  • The Slow Drift - The Stories We Tell Ourselves to Survive - episode 8

Episode 8: The Stories We Tell Ourselves to Survive

Sometimes the story that gets us through a hard season becomes the story that keeps us stuck in it.

    “I don’t have a choice.”
    “I can handle it.”
“I’m doing this for everyone else.”
    “Once things calm down…”

These stories are not always lies. Sometimes they are survival. But eventually, the question becomes whether the explanation that once helped you endure is still helping you live.

In this episode of The Slow Drift, Dr. Joshua Brown explores the stories capable people tell themselves to keep moving, why those stories can become difficult to question, and how to recognize when survival has quietly become a way of life.

Because capacity is not instruction. And the story that got you through deserves gratitude, but it does not automatically deserve control of what comes next.

Some stories are life rafts. Honor that. But a life raft is not a house.

  • When Being Needed Becomes Your Identity | The Slow Drift Episode 6
    2026/08/13

    Send us Fan Mail

Some people become so good at being useful that they no longer know how to feel valuable without a problem to solve, a person to help, or a responsibility to carry.

In Episode 6 of The Slow Drift, Dr. Joshua Brown explores what happens when being needed becomes more than something you do and starts becoming the way you understand who you are.

Drawing from leadership, military service, psychology, business ownership, fatherhood, faith, and his own experience with changing roles, Joshua examines the difference between being needed, being loved, being known, and being chosen.

This is not an argument against responsibility, service, sacrifice, or showing up for the people who depend on you. It is an invitation to remain loving and dependable without requiring another person’s dependence as proof that you matter.

Because the problem is not that people need you.

The problem is when you need their need in order to feel valuable.

Being useful is something you do.

It is not who you are.

  • BONUS Episode - Life is Ridiculous. Act Accordingly.

    This one is different.

After several heavier episodes, Dr. B takes a break from the deep end and makes room for something we do not talk about enough: fun.

In this bonus episode, he shares ridiculous stories from life with five kids, introduces “Breaking News From the Brown House” and “Old Guy Know Stuff,” explains his Ungolden Rule, and makes the case that laughter, play, curiosity, and ordinary moments are not distractions from a meaningful life. They are part of it.

Because sometimes healing does not look like another breakthrough.

Sometimes it looks like laughing until your stomach hurts, doing something completely unnecessary, and remembering that you are allowed to enjoy the life you are working so hard to build.

Life is heartbreaking, beautiful, sacred, unfair, and completely ridiculous.

    Act accordingly.

  • The Slow Drift - The Cost of Carrying Everything - episode 5

Episode 5: The Cost of Carrying Everything

There is a sentence capable people say all the time:

“Just give it to me. I’ll do it.”

You solve the problem. Make the call. Stay late. Remember what everyone else forgot. Calm the room. Carry the responsibility. And because you usually can handle it, very few people ever stop to ask whether you should.

In this episode of The Slow Drift, Dr. Joshua Brown explores the hidden cost of becoming the person everyone depends on.

Competence can quietly become expectation. Expectation can become obligation. And obligation can eventually become identity.

But this is not an argument for caring less, avoiding responsibility, or putting down anything that feels difficult. Some things are supposed to be heavy. Love, leadership, parenting, commitment, and sacrifice will sometimes ask more from us.

The real question is not simply:

    Can I carry this?

    The better question is:

    Does this deserve my strength?

Dr. Brown examines the difference between sacrifice and disappearance, responsibility and control, helping and creating dependence, justified resentment and unspoken expectations.

He also introduces The Carrying Audit, a practical framework built around five questions:

    Is it mine?

    Does it matter?

    Am I choosing it?

    What is it costing me?

Does it still deserve my strength?

Because disappearing does not always look like falling apart.

Sometimes it looks like being incredibly productive.

And the world will happily reward you for being useful long after being useful has stopped being good for you.

If you have become the fixer, the provider, the leader, the dependable one, or the person everyone calls when something goes wrong, this episode is for you.

Listen, share it with someone who carries more than most people realize, and ask yourself what still belongs in your hands.

The Slow Drift with Dr. Joshua Brown

  • The Slow Drift - Repair Faster - episode 4
    2026/07/22

    Send us Fan Mail

In Episode 4 of The Slow Drift, Dr. Joshua M. Brown explores one of the most important parts of rebuilding a life, relationship, team, or culture: learning how to repair faster.

Because the goal is not to never miss it.
The goal is to return faster when we do.

This episode is a hopeful, practical, and honest conversation about what real repair looks like, why explanations are not the same as ownership, and how trust can begin to breathe again when people learn to name what happened, own their part, care about the impact, and change something real.

Dr. Brown also unpacks the difference between truth and perception, why mature repair does not mean owning everything, and how leaders, couples, families, teams, churches, schools, and organizations can build healthier cultures by practicing repair instead of performance.

    Repair is not a speech.
    Repair is a direction.

    Be you for a change.

In Episode 3 of The Slow Drift, Dr. Joshua M. Brown explores how one honest sentence can interrupt years of drift.

Telling the truth sooner does not mean being reckless, dramatic, or cruel. It means naming what is real with wisdom, humility, and responsibility before avoidance raises the cost.

This episode is a hopeful, practical conversation about courage, repair, leadership, relationships, faith, and the kind of honesty that creates a doorway back to your life.

The truth is not just something that exposes you.
Sometimes it is the thing that frees you.
